Hypervigilance is your alarm system stuck on — scanning for danger long after the danger is gone.
Hypervigilance is a state of constant high alert — your nervous system scanning the environment, and the people in it, for any sign of threat. After prolonged danger, especially early on, the alarm doesn't switch back off when you're safe; it keeps running in the background, reading faces, tones, exits, and shifts in mood as if something could go wrong any second.

- exhaustion from never being “off”

- reading danger into neutral faces or silences
- distrusting calm — waiting for the other shoe to drop
- replaying conversations for what might go wrong
If your world was once genuinely unsafe or unpredictable, staying alert kept you ahead of harm — noticing a shift in someone's mood before it landed was a survival skill. Your system learned that vigilance equals safety, so it keeps the alarm on. The cost is that it can't tell “then” from “now,” so it guards you against a threat that's already passed.
